Learn how to use stitch to develop further surface embellishment on your felt work by incorporating hand and machine embroidery. You'll create samplers of useful hand stitches and experiment with sewing machine stitiches and free motion embroidery, to develop new patterns and textures on your felts' surfaces.

You will learn how to:

  • Create reference samplers using a variety of hand stitches practicing the technique to create each stitch and how to adapt and apply the stitches to work freely & creatively to decorate your felt.
  • Identify the pre-set stitches available on the sewing machine. Experiment with theses stitches to practice making surface effects.
  • Set up the machine to create free motion embroidery. Practive using the sewing machine to develop control using free motion embroidery. Practice using free motion embroidery to 'draw' and create surface pattern for embellishing the felt surface.
  • We will work on both cotton fabrics and handmade felt to make samplers and practice the techniques.
  • You will need to bring several pieces of hand made felt you have made prior to the workshop to practice the stitch techniques on. We will discuss how to ensure your felt to suitable for stiticing on with and you will the opportunity to make sampler pieces of felt to work on too.

This workshop takes place on Saturday 3rd & 4th May 2025, 10am - 4:00pm each day at Silversoles Studio.

A most enjoyable day! Emma’s studio was warm and welcoming and was a lovely space in which to work. Emma was an excellent tutor, explaining each stage of the feltmaking process clearly and answering any questions that arose along the way. She provided a fantastic array of materials and taught us techniques for using them to best advantage .
